You’ve done the responsible thing. Your computer is plugged into a surge protector. Maybe it’s even a nice one — a power strip with six outlets, a couple of USB ports, and a little light that glows green to tell you everything is fine. You feel protected. You feel prepared.

You’re not.

There’s a persistent myth in home electronics that a surge protector is all the protection your sensitive devices need. It’s an understandable belief — the product is literally named “surge protector“ — but it leaves your computers, routers, NAS drives, and smart home hubs exposed to some of the most common and damaging power events that actually occur in a typical home. The fix is a device most people have heard of but far fewer actually own: an Uninterruptible Power Supply, or UPS. And once you understand what a surge protector can and cannot do, you’ll wonder why you waited so long.


What a Surge Protector Actually Does (And Doesn’t Do)

A surge protector does one thing: it absorbs or diverts a sudden, dramatic spike in voltage before it reaches your devices. Think of a lightning strike nearby, or the momentary jolt that sometimes accompanies a utility company switching equipment on the grid. In those scenarios, a surge protector earns its keep — it sacrifices itself, essentially, to spare your hardware.

But here’s the catch: genuine, catastrophic voltage surges are actually among the rarer threats to your electronics. The far more common threats are ones your surge protector cannot address at all.

Brownouts. A brownout is a sustained drop in voltage — not a complete outage, but a prolonged sag in power delivery. This often happens during peak demand periods on hot summer days when the grid is stressed. Your devices keep running, but they’re being fed insufficient, dirty power. Over time, this degrades power supplies, stresses capacitors, and shortens the life of everything plugged in. A surge protector does absolutely nothing about a brownout. It’s designed to handle too much voltage, not too little.

Power outages. When the power simply goes out — whether for two seconds or two hours — your surge protector offers zero protection. Your computer crashes mid-task, your NAS drive loses power in the middle of a write operation, and your router drops every connection in the house. If you’ve ever lost unsaved work or noticed a corrupted file after an unexpected shutdown, you’ve experienced firsthand what a surge protector fails to prevent.

Micro-interruptions and voltage fluctuations. Modern power grids are surprisingly noisy. Small, rapid fluctuations in power quality happen constantly and invisibly. While no single fluctuation is dramatic enough to be called a surge, the cumulative effect on sensitive electronics — especially components with sophisticated microprocessors — is real. A surge protector doesn’t filter these out.

In short, a surge protector guards against one specific, dramatic event. Everything else? You’re on your own.


What a UPS Does Differently

A UPS is not simply a better surge protector. It is a fundamentally different class of device that approaches the problem of power protection from the ground up.

At its core, a UPS contains a battery. That battery is constantly being maintained by the wall power, and your devices are powered through the UPS rather than directly from the outlet. This architecture unlocks capabilities a surge protector can never have.

It keeps your devices running through an outage. When the power goes out, a UPS seamlessly switches to battery power — often in milliseconds, faster than your devices can even detect. Your computer keeps running. Your router keeps serving your network. Your NAS drive finishes writing its files cleanly. You have time to save your work, shut down gracefully, or simply wait out a brief interruption. Depending on the load and the size of the battery, a UPS can provide anywhere from a few minutes to well over an hour of runtime.

It regulates voltage. A quality UPS doesn’t just pass power through — it actively conditions it. The automatic voltage regulation (AVR) found in most mid-range and higher UPS units corrects both overvoltages and undervoltages before they ever reach your equipment. Brownouts are handled. Surges are absorbed. The power your devices receive is clean, stable, and consistent.

It still handles surges. Everything a surge protector does, a UPS does too — typically with higher joule ratings and more robust protection circuitry. You don’t give anything up by choosing a UPS. You only gain.

It protects against data corruption. This one is underappreciated. Hard drives and SSDs — and especially traditional spinning drives — are vulnerable to data corruption when power is cut abruptly during a write operation. NAS devices, which are often writing constantly in the background, are particularly at risk. A UPS gives your system the time it needs to complete operations and shut down cleanly, protecting your data integrity in a way no surge protector can.


“But I’ve Used a Surge Protector for Years Without a Problem”

This is the most common pushback, and it’s worth taking seriously. Many people have, in fact, used surge protectors for years without experiencing obvious harm to their devices.

There are a few things to keep in mind here. First, the damage from inadequate power protection is often cumulative and invisible. A power supply that degrades over three years instead of seven doesn’t announce itself — it just dies earlier than it should have. A router that crashes during brownouts and gets blamed on the ISP. A hard drive that develops bad sectors “for no reason.” The connection between poor power quality and hardware failure is real, but it’s rarely dramatic enough to be obvious.

Second, luck is a variable. If you live in an area with reliable, stable grid power and you’ve never had a serious storm or outage, a surge protector may have been adequate for your specific situation. But power quality varies enormously by region, season, and even neighborhood. You may simply not have needed more protection yet.

Third, the risk calculus has changed. A decade ago, a home might have had a desktop computer and a modem. Today, the average household has multiple computers, a router, a network switch, a NAS, smart home hubs, streaming devices, and more — all interconnected, all potentially compromised by a single power event. The value of what’s at risk — not just the hardware, but the irreplaceable data and the productivity — has gone up substantially.


Choosing a UPS: What to Look For

Getting started with a UPS doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive. Here’s what matters:

VA rating. This is a measure of the UPS’s power capacity. Add up the wattage of the devices you plan to protect (your computer, monitor, router, etc.) and look for a UPS whose watt capacity exceeds that total with some headroom. A 1000VA / 600W unit is a solid starting point for a home office setup.

Automatic Voltage Regulation (AVR). Look for this feature specifically. Line-interactive UPS units with AVR actively correct voltage without switching to battery, which extends battery life and provides cleaner power during non-outage events.

Battery runtime. Consider how long you actually need. For most home users, the goal isn’t to keep running indefinitely — it’s to survive a brief outage or have time to save and shut down gracefully. Even 5–10 minutes of runtime is transformative compared to zero.

Number of battery-backed outlets. Most UPS units have two types of outlets: battery-backed (which provide full protection and runtime) and surge-only (which behave like a standard surge protector). Make sure your critical devices are on the battery-backed outlets.

Software integration. Many UPS units can connect to your computer via USB and include software that will automatically save your work and initiate a graceful shutdown if the battery runs low. For a home server or NAS, this feature is practically essential.


The Bottom Line

A surge protector is better than nothing. But calling it adequate protection for your home electronics is like calling a smoke detector adequate fire protection for your home — it’s a warning system, not a solution. It addresses one scenario while leaving you exposed to everything else.

A UPS, by contrast, provides genuine, comprehensive power protection. It guards against surges. It rides out outages. It cleans up dirty power and corrects voltage irregularities. It gives your devices the clean, stable electricity they were designed to run on, and it gives you the time you need to respond gracefully when the grid lets you down.

Your computers, routers, and home servers are not cheap. The data on them is often irreplaceable. The cost of a quality UPS — typically $80 to $200 for a home setup — is modest compared to what it protects. It’s one of those purchases you make once, forget about entirely, and then one day, when the power blinks out during a thunderstorm and your computer keeps humming along without missing a beat, you’ll be very glad you made it.
